TLC Global: Spreading Knowledge, Sharing Skills
In August 2024, TLC Global sponsored a service trip to Hawassa, where several TLC staff members provided teacher training, youth enrichment activities, and audiology services.
Building on this momentum, leaders from TLC and TLC Global visited in January 2025 to strengthen the partnership and continue supporting the school’s leadership and growth. Another TLC staff trip is planned for August, 2025.
Following the success of our initiatives at Visions Academy, we aim to expand our work to other schools in the developing world.
A School for Jambo
It was by chance that Jambo, a young deaf boy living on a farm outside of Hawassa, was discovered by Amsalu Desie, the founder of Visions Academy.
One rainy afternoon, Amsalu pulled his motorbike off the road to wait out the storm. Chatting with a local farmer as he waited, Amsalu learned about a family with a deaf child who lived nearby. Intrigued, Amsalu decided to visit them once the rain subsided.
At the family’s home, Amsalu met Jambo, who had never attended school due to his deafness and the family’s circumstances. Jambo’s family welcomed Amsalu’s offer to send him to Visions Academy, the first school for deaf children in the area. Jambo’s older sister, who was hearing, would also attend to support him.
Amsalu left the family’s home that day knowing he had made a difference. Jambo and his sister would be the first in their family to go to school, opening a new world of possibilities for the young boy and bringing hope to a family that had once thought education was out of reach.
